Cut List
- 8 stakes from 5/8" flat reed @ 24"
- 1 stake from 5/8" flat reed @ 32"
Setting up a Workspace
Before you begin weaving lay a large towel down on your work surface. This will catch any excess water as you work with the damp/wet reed.
Set another towel down to one side and place a bin of warm water on top of this towel. This bin will be where you soak the reed to keep things damp.
Finally lay out your tools in easy reach to one side where they won’t be in your way.
Cut Pieces
Using a measuring tape, cut reed pieces using the cut list above. Measure using a measuring tape, not previously cut reed, as this will result in varying lengths of reed.
Keep Reed Damp
As you work, keep the reed damp so that it stays pliable.
Weaving Instructions
Mark the center of each stake.
Lay out the 8 stakes that are 24” long.
Weave in the 32” stake to form the base. Match it to the center marks on the 24” long stakes.
Twine around the base, getting the twining as close as possible.
Upset the stakes
Weave the walls of the basket, alternating sides as you start and stop each row.
Cut and tuck the stakes.
Tuck in a length of ⅝” flat-oval reed as a handle on the third and sixth stakes on the backside of the basket.
Apply inner and outer rims using 5/8" flat-oval reed. A ⅝” flat reed can be used as an alternative inner rim if
you find the flat-oval reed is too stiff or thick to fit.
Insert seagrass into the rim.
Lash the rim with a 1/4" flat-oval reed.
Finish off the lashing by loosening the lasher inside the basket.
Allow the basket to dry fully. This may take a day or two.
Sign and date the bottom of the basket with a permanent marker.
Staining or Sealing the Basket
Once your basket is completely dry you have the option to stain or seal it.
Sealing the basket will protect it from mold, mildew and wear from use.
Staining can change the reed's color to a different wood tone. You do this after the piece is woven because it seals the reed, eliminating its ability to soak up moisture (which is necessary for the weaving process).
