Why Clean a Handwoven Basket?
Handwoven baskets can become dirty from oils on your hands, dust, dirt from gardening, and even mold or mildew, especially if you live in a humid environment. These contaminants can degrade the reed or rattan, causing the basket to weaken, wear out, or develop unpleasant odors. Dirt and grit can also abrade the basket fibers, leading to a rough texture and a shorter lifespan. Regular cleaning helps restore your basket’s appearance and ensures it lasts longer.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions
Prepare the Cleaning Solution
- Fill a bathtub, wash tub, or large bin with warm (not hot) water.
- Add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of mild dish soap.
- Swish to mix thoroughly.
Soak the Basket
- Place the basket in the soapy water.
- Let it soak for about 5 minutes to loosen dirt, oils, and any mold.
Scrub Gently
- Use a soft scrub brush or sponge to scrub the entire basket, inside and out lightly.
- Focus on dirty or moldy spots, but clean the whole basket to ensure all mildew is removed.
- Avoid aggressive scrubbing to prevent raising fibers and creating a fuzzy texture.
Rinse Thoroughly
- Empty the soapy water.
- Rinse the basket with clean water to remove all soap and dirt residue.
Dry the Basket
- Pat the basket dry with a lint-free towel so it is not dripping.
- Place it in a well-ventilated area with good airflow to dry completely.
- Allow 2 days to a week for full drying, depending on the basket’s thickness and weave.
Optional: Finishing for Longevity
After the basket is dry, you can apply a food-grade mineral oil (cutting board or butcher block oil) to help prevent future mold and dirt buildup. This step is especially helpful if you use the basket for food or in humid environments.
How to Apply Oil:
- Use a lint-free cloth to apply a light coat of oil to the basket’s surface.
- Allow the oil to absorb fully, repeating 2–3 times as needed.
- Let the basket sit until it is no longer greasy to the touch.
